Rising from the Ashes

In April 2005 we received an early morning telephone call which would be the catalyst to creating Ask Insurance Services and its customer focused philosophy.

One of my elderly mother’s relatives rang to inform me that there had been a fire in her home and we needed to come immediately, so we drove to Cheshire before the world had risen. Fortunately, my Mother was not at home at the time of the incident or the results could have been far worse. Upon arriving we could not have anticipated the extent of the damage nor the impact that it would have over the next year.

Although I had been a Claims Handler for a number of years I was no longer in the insurance industry, but I knew my way around a claim and I knew that the claim was valid. However, through circumstances, over the year my mother had found herself insured with two insurers, one for the building and one for the contents. The Loss Adjusters appointed by the Insurers for the building readily accepted the claim and the property was to be reinstated. However, The Loss Adjuster appointed on behalf of the contents insurer believed that there had been a breach of the policy conditions and thus rejected the claim. This led to a couple of months of anguish until we were able to prove that the policy condition had not, in fact, been breached.

The event rekindled my passion for dealing with insurance claims and, ironically, I was subsequently employed by the very same Loss Adjuster who had initially rejected the claim, albeit in a different capacity, and I saw first-hand how difficult it was for people to prove their claim. Sometimes it was correct to reject a claim based on the evidence at hand, but at other times it just felt morally and ethically wrong to penalise someone for something which was not of their making.

Born out of adversity, Ask Insurance Services was formed thereafter.  Using my experience both within insurance and at the receiving end of it, our driving goal is to ensure that our clients would never have to go through what we had been through and, crucially, to be a friendly face when it is most needed.

In June 2020 Ask moved from ‘me’ to ‘We’ when Russell was joined by his wife Ann, who took up the position of company secretary on a part time basis.  Ann wears many hats as she also juggles working in the NHS as a staff nurse on nights, and grandparent duties – “who said (semi) retirement was boring?!”

Although Ann has not had a background in Insurance she reinforces the caring, compassionate ethos that Ask prides itself on.

That passion remains to this day, and we are often found leaving the house at various hours of the day or night to stand by our clients in their hour of need.

Supporting us in this passion are Momentum Broker Solutions who provide invaluable access to insurer markets and broking capability enabling us to compete on a national level and access over 200 insurer markets including local, London and Lloyds. Unlike some brokers, we are not tied to specific insurers but select insurers on the basis of the most appropriate policy wordings and cover for a risk, and not on the broker earnings from working with them. Between Ask and Momentum we have over 60 staff focussed on supporting you, our clients.
